The Last Years of the Soviet Union The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or USSR was at one time one of leading world powers, only rivaled by the United States. So that begs the questions, â€Å"how could a country that was at one time so dominant fall so far?† In this essay I will examine the circumstances that led up to the Soviet Union’s eventual downfall by mainly focusing Mikhail Gorbachev’s term as leader of the Communist party of the Soviet Union and what changes he brought about through glasnost and perestroika, democratization and the national independence movements that began as a result of it, and lastly failed coup by conservative members of the USSR against Gorbachev that ultimately became the last nail in the coffin for the†¦show more content†¦His solution was to launch a new campaign promoting reconstruction, or perestroika, to mainly to decentralize the USSR’s government. However Gorbachev soon realized that he could not impleme nt his new plan without first changing the perspective of the people within the USSR itself and thus pushed forward his other campaign focusing on openness or glasnost. Gorbachev’s goal with glasnost was to gain the peoples trust. Before Gorbachev people within the Soviet Union had little to no voice when it came to decisions within their own country, usually just having to accept whatever choices that the leaders in Moscow had made. He tried to make the Soviet government appear more trustworthy than it had ever seemed before by making the government management of the country almost transparent. It was a policy of openness and discussions of political and social issues would be open for discussion. This meant that every action the government took would be public knowledge and open to debate. The results of glasnost also caused a decline in censorship, which lead new found freedom of speech, which in turn led to increased criticism of decisions that the Soviet Union had made p rior. Media outlets now were allowed to voice their own opinions and not worry about the ramifications in doing so because glasnost was slowly loosening the stranglehold that the Communist party held over the media. The art of war is simple...kill your enemy, destroy their resources, and eliminate their ability to wage war against you and your interests. How we accomplish those goals and objectives is more complex and difficult due to political, logistical, and moral complications. Projectiles have been around for many years, from the early days of the catapult to our present day long-range missiles. Although â€Å"pilotless drones† were developed for target practice after World War I, when we think of unmanned military weapons systems, it is easy to correlate them with the missiles and bombs most of us are familiar with. However, one main difference is that missiles and bombs are the actual detonating device whereas an unmanned system can deliver the payload and return to base intact, ready to reuse again. These systems are more in-kind with an airplane that delivers munitions, with the major difference being airplanes are limited in flight not only by fuel, in absence of in air re-fueling, but the pilot’s aeronautical ability and physiological limitation. He was the most celebrated painter of the fifteen-century in Europe. One of his famous works is â€Å"The Last Judgment†. At first sight this work immediately attracted my attention. The painting’s stunning colors and the fact that it reminded me of a previous similar work I have seen, triggered in my mind. The material that is used is oil on canvas, transferred from wood. The size of this work is 22 1/4 *7 2/3 in. (56.5 * 19.7cm).As I closely approached the painting I began to realize the differences between Jan van Eyck and Michelangelo’s â€Å"Last Judgment†. Contrary to Michelangelo’s â€Å"Last Judgment†, Jan van Eyck’s work has specifically distinguished â€Å"Good† and â€Å"Evil†. It is separated into three tiers. In the upper portion of this work of art only heaven is represented. Jesus Christ is on the top, above all the people in heaven, having Maria next to him, on his right hand side and surrounded by angels. In the middle part of Jan van Eyck’s â€Å"Last Judgment† limbo is represented. This is state midway between heaven and hell. Hell is represented at the bottom part of Jan van Eyck’s work. To clarify the separation between limbo and hell, death is vividly drawn. However, in Michelangelo’s â€Å"Last Judgment† each figure preserves its own individuality and both the single figure and the groups need their own background. In the depths of the scene figures are rising from their graves. Naked skeletons are covered with new flesh and dead men help each other to rise from the earth. II.El Greco’s â€Å"Christ Carrying the Cross†El Greco’s real name is Domenikos Theotokopoulos and his Greek. He was born in 1541 and died in 1614. During his long career in Spain, El Greco produced numerous paintings of Christ carrying the cross. The first sight of this painting extremely moved me. In this work, no other figures are represented and the setting is not recognizable. In the depth of his eyes one can see the suffering and pain for our human sacrifice. As well as this one can also see the holy look on the facial expression as hegently carries the cross. On the cross, above the left hand in Greek letters, â€Å"domenikos theotokopoulos epoiei† is written. â€Å"Christ Carrying the Cross† is one of the most intriguing work of art. III.Pendant mask; Iyoba 16th centuryThe artist’s name is Benin and he is from Nigeria. He lived in the 16th century. To produce this mask he used ivory, iron and copper. The mask’s height is 9 3/9 in (23.8 cm). This mask is an image of a woman. An image of a woman is very rare in Benin’s tradition. However, this work of art represents the legacy of a continuous dynasty. This mask is believed to be designed for Benin’s King’s mother. It is also believed that this mask was used to commemorate king’s mother. The color of the mask is white, a symbol of purity. On the mask, one can se the details of the face showing the impression of it. One can distinguish the angry eyes, the big nose and the puffing lips. There are carved scarification marks on the forehead, and below the chin there are bands of coral beads. This piece of art belongs to the Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial collection. Question: Discuss about the intended contribution to the project. Answer: I intended to undertake an internship at a firm named MB Petroleum services LLC in the finance department. Generally, the primary job of a financial analyst is to evaluate the business, budgets, profits and other finance related entities in order to identify their suitability for the investment. Therefore, my intension was to interpret and forecast the complex financial data of the organization. This requires good knowledge and I got an opportunity to show and represent my knowledge and both understandable and problem solving skills to the corporate of the firm. My role was to interpret and forecast the complex fiscal data. Moreover, I got an opportunity to learn more about the kind of costs, importance of considering relative costs and to grasp the advantage of potential actions for selecting the accurate one. All these helped me and I know it will also help in my future. For example, knowledge regarding implementation of various types of costs makes me able to communicate and synth esize data to the relevant party. I tried to grasp every opportunity in order to proof my ability to become the financial analyst in future that is the person who can handle the difficult financial situation of a firm and can also prevent the firm from getting into trouble. In addition to this, I also gained information about making decisions about the firms performance. I guess that this would assist me to develop my decision making and judgment skills.
